When it comes to cutlery, whether its silver cutlery or stainless steel cutlery, it has a tendency to go missing…
Cutlery can be a valuable commodity, especially if it’s cutlery from a historic, wealthy or luxury home or office. And even the humble stainless steel cutlery can become sought after if you’re in an office that’s short of teaspoons.
The allure of Silver Cutlery
Stainless steel cutlery may have a more utilitarian use, but silver cutlery can be valuable and sought after. The story of the quality cutlery that was stolen from Russia’s State Duma – its lower house of parliament- a few years ago, says it all. Russia’s parliament building was hit by a spate of cutlery thefts and even lead to an investigation by the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
Quality Stainless Steel Cutlery Targeted
The thefts consisted of quality silver cutlery, stainless steel cutlery and crockery from the canteens and bars in the parliament buildings. The loss of cutlery was so extreme that plastic cutlery had to be used to replace the silver cutlery and stainless steel cutlery. It was thought at the height of the problem, between 30 and 40 spoons and 15 forks went missing in one week.
Serving Ladies Suffered
It may seem like a trivial misdemeanour but the stolen silver and stainless steel cutlery caused huge upset amongst the catering staff who had their pay docked for every piece of missing silver cutlery and stainless steel cutlery. The stolen crockery could be put down to breakages but of course you can’t break stainless steel cutlery – so the serving ladies suffered.
Silver Cutlery as Souvenirs
Some MPs believed that stealing Russia’s finest silver cutlery and stainless steel cutlery is a way to get a souvenir from the building. Similarly, at the world famous Savoy hotel in London, a head waiter went on an 18-year thieving spree. He stole 500 items from the Savoy worth around £4,000. The items he stole included glasses, vases, coffee pots, chocolate, cutlery - silver cutlery, stainless steel cutlery and jam. The waiter was ordered to do community service and narrowly missed jail.
Spoons go AWOL
It’s a common known fact that after stationery, teaspoons are the next office item to go ‘missing’. It may seem like a trivial act because cutlery is such an everyday object, but when it comes to quality silver cutlery and stainless steel cutlery it can be quite expensive – especially if it has to be replaced several times a year.
