Before the set was found, silver cutlery was thought to go no further back than the late 17th century but the set auctioned at Christie’s pre-dated these considerably and was eventually snapped up by a private collector, who was more than willing to pay the £1.24 million price tag.

Speaking to the tabloid, Anthony Phillips of Christie’s, stated, “This extraordinarily early complete banqueting service appears to be a unique survival. Over the last few years, Christie’s silver department has been fortunate to have made a number of astonishing discoveries in the area of German silver cutlery.”
