Cutlery pieces to add to your set

Whether you’ve been given silver or stainless steel cutlery as a present, or you’ve invested in good quality cutlery yourself, you’ll probably find that there are extra pieces of cutlery you’d like to add to your set. Just as you’d buy a basic place setting of china and then add serving dishes, gravy boats and tea cups as you go along, so you can add various things to your cutlery, making a complete set that looks fabulous on your dinner table.

Completing your cutlery collection

Most cutlery that you can buy today comes with a certain number of place settings. Depending on the manufacturer, you may be able to buy a four, six, eight or twelve-place setting, but there may be additional items that you want to buy. Remember to make sure that you choose the same pattern and the same type of cutlery so that you really do have a matching set – try to pair silver cutlery with silver cutlery, for example, not mix and match silver and stainless steel:

  • Fish knives and forks – you can buy settings that include fish knives and forks, but generally, people tend to add these at a later date. Whilst you can obviously eat fish with a traditional knife and fork, fish knives are specially designed to help lift the flesh of the fish from the bones and if you have a sense of traditional etiquette, you really shouldn’t serve fish without giving your guests the proper utensils to eat it with.

  • Steak knives – modern cutlery sets are well-made, with sharp dinner or table knives, and this can make the traditional steak knife a bit of a luxury. If you’re a lover of steak, however, you’ll know how much nicer it is to cut into the beef with a really sharp knife, and these can be a welcome addition to your cutlery set.
  • Serving spoons and slices – again, some cutlery canteens come with serving spoons, but there many not be enough for your needs, and you might also want to invest in additional serving equipment. Bringing a variety of cutlery to your table gives a disjointed feel – much the same as using three or four different types of wine glass or different patterns of china. Instead, look for serving spoons, ladles, slices and servers that match your cutlery pattern.

  • Butter knives – whilst we don’t host formal dinners as often as past generations may have done, we still want to ensure that our guests can eat at our table as easily as possible. Whether it’s bread with the soup course, or for the crackers that accompany the cheese you’ll need to put butter on the table. Guests don’t want to plunge their side knife into communal butter, so a separate butter knife is essential, and always looks great on your table. You can add a butter knife to your cutlery collection for a small price, and achieve a great effect.
